UAE. In a promising move towards establishing the UAE as a centre for scientific research and development, Techno Park, a Dubai World business unit, and the Boston University College of Engineering have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperative research in the field of high technology.
The memorandum allows the two parties to embark on research projects of mutual benefit and is projected as an inventive scientific partnership between two pioneers.
The MoU was signed in Boston earlier this month by Hamad Al Hashemi, Managing Director, Techno Park, and Kenneth Lutchen, Dean at the Boston University College of Engineering, in the presence of Ibrahim Al Janahi Senior Vice President, Commercial Sales, JAFZA (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Economic Zones World), and Dr Farouq Al-Baz, Director, Centre of Remote Sensing at Boston University, and Senior Advisor, Techno Park.
After signing the MoU, Al Hashemi said: “This path-breaking initiative with a reputed institution like Boston University will go a long way in realising Dubai’s strategic goal of reviving major scientific research in the Arab world. The UAE’s relentless drive towards securing a knowledge-based economy will benefit immensely from this. We look forward to swift progress towards establishing an elevated technological and scientific research base in Dubai.”
During their meetings the two sides discussed a proposal to set up an Advisory Board for Techno Park and the initiation of a research organisation, including priority establishments such as a Centre for Excellence.
Al Hashemi added: “Facilitating research and development is at the core of everything we do in Techno Park. The proposed Centre for Excellence will be involved in matching and applying scientific innovations to the high-tech industry clusters that Techno Park is actively promoting at present. The lead that Boston University will provide our R&D efforts adds new dynamics to our pursuit of technological security for future generations.”
Dr Al-Baz, one of the most renowned Arab-American scientists in the world, said: “This MoU is a potent combination of knowledge and resources to advance the cause of science and technology in the Middle East. Boston University and Techno Park have embarked on a noble journey that will benefit all of mankind.”
The Boston University College of Engineering is a scientific school recognised globally for its educational research, with a faculty working in 24 research laboratories and 14 research centres. It has been ranked amongst the top graduate schools of engineering in America by the magazine, US News and World Report.
