UAE. Evonik has introduced two new grades of precipitated silica for use as antiblocking agents: SPHERILEX® 60 AB and SPHERILEX® 30 AB.

Antiblocking agents are essential additives in the production of plastic films. These additives help facilitate film winding operations and improve the handling properties of films during subsequent processing.

Both SPHERILEX® grades are produced using a new, patented manufacturing process that simultaneously allows spherical particle shape, controlled particle size, and narrow particle size distribution to be achieved. SPHERILEX® 60 AB was developed for standard films based on PE and PP, whereas SPHERILEX® 30 AB is specially designed for very thin films such as biaxially oriented films.

This combination of product properties mentioned above enables the application as a highly efficient antiblocking agent in blown and cast films including polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polyamide (PA).

Evonik is one of the world's leading manufacturers of silica. In addition to the fumed silica AEROSIL® and the precipitated silica ULTRASIL®, SIPERNAT®, ZEODENT® and SPHERILEX®,  Evonik also produces silica-based matting agents under the brand name ACEMATT® and other fumed metal oxides under the brand AEROXIDE®. Overall, Evonik has a global production capacity for all silica based products of about 1 million metric tons per year.

"We are happy to announce the official launch of two new products for the Plastics industry: SPHERILEX® 30 AB and SPHERILEX® 60 AB. SPHERILEX® 30 AB and SPHERILEX® 60 AB is a specialty precipitated silica, which has attractive properties for antiblocking application of polymer films" said Mohan Konar, Senior Business Manager for Silica, Evonik Middle East and Africa.

"As shown in antiblocking testing, its spherical particle morphology and uniform particle size distribution provides optimal clarity and antiblocking efficiency in plastic films. Based on its low absorptivity it performs also excellent in combination with slip agents. High masterbatch loadings are possible due to its easy incorporation and dispersion during thermoplastic compounding process" Konar added
