QATAR. Qatar Airways has threatened to cancel orders made to US aircraft manufacturer Boeing if the company fails to meet its delivery commitments.
Qatar's national airline is one of the largest Boeing clients with orders for planes, including the Dreamliner aircraft, worth billions of dollars to be delivered over the next few years.
However, due to a strike last year at Boeing’s manufacturing facilities in the US, the delivery of the Dreamliner aircraft had been rescheduled.
Fielding questions on the BBC’s HardTalk show, the airline’s CEO Akbar Al Baker said: “I am not playing with words…I want my aircraft earlier…We gave them an ultimatum to accept the conditions because they have been continuously delaying the delivery.”
“If this is the way they treat customers they will not only miss me but other countries as well,” said Al Baker responding to questions from the interviewer.
Qatar Airways is launching services to Melbourne early next month.
The airline will fly to the Australian destination three times a week with plans to increase the service to seven times a week from January next year.
The airline’s plans may be delayed if the delivery schedules from Boeing is not met, a source in the airline said.
This is not the first time the Qatar Airways CEO has spoken publicly against Boeing with regard to aircraft delivery schedules.
