UAE. To mark World Diabetes Day on the 14 November, the UAE Ministry of Health conducted the screening of 400 Mall of the Emirates visitors.

The event, in collaboration with Sanofi-aventis, is also in line with the partnership between private and public institutions to promote health services.

Among the activities, a full screening campaign was set up to test for symptoms of the disease and educate and inform people of the dangers of diabetes and how best to avoid it.
The initiative took place in Mall of the Emirates from ten-till-ten to give as many people as possible the chance to be screened.

Dr Mahmoud Fikri, CEO Health Policies Affairs, and Chairman of the National Board of Diabetes Control, said the national board is undertaking all initiatives related to diabetes in an attempt to combat the effects of the disease.

The operations plan for this year, approved by the Ministerial Council for Services to fight diabetes, included activities, campaigns and screenings for the public. He also noted that all health centres in the country now have a specialized clinic for checking and treating diabetes and cooperation is needed from everyone to support the campaign and prevent the disease.

Diabetes is currently the fastest growing debilitating disease in the world and in 2008, its prevalence ranked the UAE 2nd in the world per capita.
General Manager, sanofi-aventis, Jean-Marc Voissier believes that the earlier the education starts, the better.

“To be able to involve young people in events of this kind is a great way to learn about a healthier lifestyle.

The screening in particular brings it home to people that there is a very real risk of diabetes and it is a condition that affects millions of people across the world. It can be devastating to the sufferers and their families.

We want to be able to persuade people that they can make a difference to their own health and diabetes is an example of that.”
While nearly one in five UAE residents lives with diabetes, that number rises to two in five for the over 60s.

The onset of type 1 diabetes is often sudden and dramatic and can include symptoms such as:

• Abnormal thirst and a dry mouth
• Frequent urination
• Extreme tiredness/lack of energy
• Constant hunger
• Sudden weight loss
• Slow-healing wounds
• Recurrent infections
• Blurred vision
