UAE. As part of its efforts to realse the Emirate of Abu Dhabi’s vision to be a world class, highly developed and environmentally sustainable society, and acting upon the soaring needs for recycling in the Emirate, The Center of Waste Management - Abu Dhabi (CWM) has launched today the first eco-friendly door to door recycling scheme of its kind in the region, with kick-start at three areas in Abu Dhabi, namely; Khalidiya, Bein El Jisrein ( Between the Two Bridges) and Officers City.

The objectives of this new recycling scheme are to reduce the amounts of waste sent to landfills; maximize resource efficiency in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi; involving residents in recycling efforts and boosting awareness about environmental issues.

‘The scheme is one of many initiatives launched by the Center to increase recycling rates and to promote the habit of green-practices in the Emirate” said HE Majid Al Mansouri, “Through this scheme, the Center hopes to bring to the attention of the public, that a big part of what we throw away as waste can actually be recycled and helping us to keep our society clean, and realize the vision to become a world-class highly developed and environmentally sustainable Emirate”.

The recycling scheme involves the provision of a dual sort system (green and black bins) to the villas to segregate their recyclables from waste.

To ensure a smooth implementation of this new recycling scheme, the villas were visited by a trained team who consisted of the center’s staff along with enthusiastic university students who keenly volunteered to educate the residents about the scheme and its objectives.. A comprehensive brochure was also given to each household to guide them and explain to them about which materials can be recycled (the green bins for recyclable material and the black bins for waste).

With the kick-start scheduled for three areas in Abu Dhabi, the scheme will extend to Al Ain during the next few weeks, and later to the Western Region, until it eventually covers the whole emirate, in order to achieve the broader goal of contributing to a green and sustainable environment, in which segregating waste becomes part of every household’s daily routine, which will eventually help save our trees, water and energy.

In order to make this scheme a success, the Center has agreed with several contactors to put in place a plan for transporting recyclable waste according to a specific schedule for each area, as all collected materials will be sent to a collection point where it’s segregated and used as resources for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

‘We can all contribute to a greener future, by following very simple steps than can be integrated into our daily routine, and will eventually help save our trees, water and energy,’ concluded H.E Al Mansouri.
