SAUDI ARABIA. In a market-leading step, Al-jazirah newspaper announced its sales and subscriptions figures to the public, for the first time in the Saudi press history. According to these numbers Al-Jazirah circulation has topped 131,000 copies daily.

Al-jazirah Corporation General Manager Abdullatif Al Ateeq has received a message from Mohamed Ali Al- Khodair, the General Manager of the National Distribution Company, congratulating him for the great success and the growing circulation achieved by Al-jazirah newspaper.

Being the sole company responsible of distributing Saudi newspapers, including Al-Jazirah newspaper, it is worth mentioning that the National Distribution Company, owned by the Saudi newspapers, enjoys a high level of transparency and independence.

“The announcement of our distribution and subscription figures is a brave decision that we dared to take in order to help readers and advertisers discover the reality about Al-jazirah level of readership and circulation among other newspapers,” said Shaikh Mutlaq Al Mutlaq, Al-jazirah Chairman of the board.

Expressing his appreciation for Al-jazirah readers and advertisers who supported the newspaper to reach such a high level, Shaikh Mutlaq added: “I hope this strategy will meet the desire of His Excellency Iad Medany, the Minister of Culture and Information, to establish an independent authority for verifying the range of spreading of Saudi newspapers, which would represented in the Audit Bureau of Circulation.

Al-jazirah newspaper has achieved success in many fields of journalism, locally and internationally. Such achievements have been crowned by the honour bestowed on Al-Jazirah by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz for its initiative in launching a Research Chair Programme in a number of Saudi Universities. Al-jazirah also has been awarded the best print prize in Asia by Ifra in Manila in 2007. Al-jazirah website has been granted the Digital Excellence Award from the Ministry of Communication for the year 2007.

Al-jazirah newspaper has also been awarded the Arabian journalism prize in Dubai for three successive years. It has, moreover, been awarded the best coverage of Hajj season for two successive years.

Last but not least, Al-jazirah, represented by Khaled Al-malik, has been invited to the 2007 World Association of Newspapers Conference, held in South Africa. Through this participation, the first of its kind for a Saudi newspaper, Al-jazirah called for consideration of the Arabic language as one of the approved languages in the conference. As it gained approval, the Arabic language is to be included with other languages for the first time since the conference has been launched 60 years ago.
