Kirkuk Telecom and US firm sign joint venture for new Iraqi service

IRAQ. Today Waria Salhi, Chairman of Kirkuk Telecom Company, a subsidiary of Salihi Group International of Kirkuk, and Rounsevelle Schaum, Chairman of Newport Global Technologies of the US, announced the formation of Kirkuk International Telecom (KIT) a joint venture to expand the telecommunication, and video streaming services to Kirkuk Province and Iraqi territories.

Speaking in Washington DC, Chairman Salihi stated: “This new broadband wireless telecommunication network will significantly increase our province’s international telephone connectivity and high speed Internet, VoIP telephony, streaming of news, video and music, and open access to distance learning, including connectivity to international medical and educational facilities and top quality wireless video streaming services."

In addition, he said, the project will bring significant investment money into Kirkuk and will create many jobs for Kirkuk citizens.

Airports, good transportation, and accommodation facilities are one way to promote Kirkuk to international businesses and investors. However, another significant method is a state-of-art telecommunication service that can virtually connect Kirkuk to the world at the touch of a button.

Schaum, the Chairmen of Newport Global, stated: “We are very pleased to have the opportunity to apply our skills and expertise in developing telecommunication systems for emerging economics. We are confident that the new systems that will be built and operated by our joint venture will provide significant support to economic development activates presently underway and planned for Kirkuk and other Iraqi provinces.”
