UAE. The registration of falconry as a world intangible heritage at UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity project, which has been adopted by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH), is one of the unique heritage projects that stand for cultural co-existence between nations throughout the world, said Mohammed Khalaf Al-Mazrouei, ADACH Director General, at the opening session of the a workshop on falconry organized by the authority in Abu Dhabi.

The two-day event took place in the Abu Dhabi Police Officers Club and attended by officials from the UAE, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Qatar, Belgium, France, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Mongolia, South Korea, and Spain.

The UAE, represented by Abu Dhabi emirate, is keen on supporting initiatives aimed at protecting the environment and preserving intangible and tangible heritage. This is evident in UAE’s selection as the hosting country of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) headquarters.

The emirate has taken on a new challenge as it leads international efforts to include falconry in the UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Actions are underway to present this file to the UNESCO before the end of this month.

Al-Mazrouei also pointed out that the “UAE leadership leaves no unturned stone to support all projects to preserve our deeply-rooted heritage and UNESCO’s efforts to preserve the humanity cultural heritage in general.” The official also said that the ADACH spared no efforts throughout the last years to get this file ready before presenting it the UNESCO, and successfully managed to bring other countries on board.

On his part, H.E. Majid Al Mansouri, Secretary General of Abu Dhabi Environment Agency, welcomed the participating delegations and voiced his thanks to the countries that supported the project.

ADACH sources said that a committee, headed by Dr. Nasser Al Hameeri, Director of the Department of the Intangible Heritage, and Dr. Ismaeel Ali Al Fihail, the intangible heritage expert, started arranging the dossier in February 2006, in collaboration with the Emirates Falconers' Club, Abu Dhabi Environment Agency, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Community Development, Awad Ali Salih, the Secretary General of the UAE National Commissions for UNESCO, some NGOs in addition to national and international experts.

ADACH will also play host for the coming meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, due to take place from 28 September to 2 October of this year.
